The Okoa Kids

Okoa's residential child rescue program is truly unlike any other. Children come to Okoa directly from the police, local hospital or the local government social welfare office. Each and every child is welcomed to Okoa and immediately integrated into the family.

Though Okoa's Rescue Center is incredible and our staff is passionate about the kids, we do not believe that any child should have to grow up in an institution. To that end, we work diligently to find permanent homes for each of our children. This means tracing relatives and resettling the child in a home, or finding a domestic adoptive family.

Children who are resettled into their families are still followed up with by the Okoa staff. Their families receive some support from the organization, but the ultimate goal is to empower the families to reach a point of being able to provide for the kiddos themselves.

Okoa kids range in age from babies who are just hours old and up to young adults in college! Each child is cared for as an individual according to his/her needs.

At Okoa, we believe that every child deserves the world! Okoa's goal is to help all of the children reach their full potentials...and to ensure that they know how loved, valued and precious they are along the way!

What exactly do we spend the money on?

We doubled the size of our Rescue Center in 2020 and changed our caretaker to child ratio. In the baby home it is 1:3, dorms are 1:5 and the Independent Living Program is 1:5. Our social workers are a 1:5 ratio as well. We do 5-9 resettlement’s every quarter. That means 20-36 children every year are going home to their forever families.

  • We have just 3-4 kids to a room

  • 60 staff members

  • 100 kids in school

  • 30 babies

What kinds of kids come to the Okoa Rescue Center?

  • Babies thrown in latrines

  • Babies whose mom’s died in childbirth

  • Children in witness protection who are waiting to testify in court

  • Very sick and malnourished children who need specialized care and/or surgery

  • Babies of trafficking victims who are too young or are having too much trauma induced mental health issues. These are referrals from our GBV shelters and TOP Campuses.

  • Neglected and abandoned babies and children

  • Children of convicted criminals who need a safe place to live so that they don’t face retribution from the victim’s relatives

For to be free is not merely to cast off ones chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.
